Huntington Powers Past Oakland City in National Tournament Opener
MOBILE, Ala. - The 10th-ranked Huntington men's tennis team wasted little time making a statement on the national stage Tuesday afternoon, cruising past #23 Oakland City, 4-1, in first round action of the 74th annual NAIA National Championship at the Mobile Tennis Center in Mobile, Alabama.
The Foresters set the tone early by securing the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles before carrying that momentum straight into singles play.
Martin Capdevilla was the first to strike for Huntington in singles action, putting together a dominant showing at the No. 3 spot with a convincing 6-0, 6-1 win over Juanes Pinto to give HU a 2-0 advantage.
Javier Lopez Real followed suit at No. 5 singles, handling Louki Nivarlet in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, to move the Foresters within one point of advancing.
Juan Carrasco delivered the clincher at No. 6 singles in dramatic fashion. After taking the opening set 6-2, Carrasco dropped the second before regrouping for a gritty 6-4 win in the deciding set to officially send Huntington on to day two of the national tournament.
Tuesday's victory marked Huntington's second win over the Mighty Oaks this season after also defeating Oakland City by a 4-1 count during spring break play back in March.
With the win, the Foresters improve to 21-4 on the season and advance to face seventh-ranked Lindsey Wilson on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. ET in Mobile.
